Which month is best for renting a cabin in Big Bear?  That really depends on what you want to do…

Big Bear in Winter

Obviously, being a mountain community, Big Bear typically gets snow in the winter, and always has skiing, making it a wonderful weekend excursion for those who live in Southern California.  Families can spend time sledding, building snow men, and depending on the amount of snow on the ground, can go on hikes in the nearby parks.

Walking through The Village for shopping and dining is particularly beautiful when snow is on the ground during Winter time.

Of course, renting a cabin in Big Bear during the winter months will cost you more than any other time of year, so be ready for a bit of sticker shock if you want to visit during the peak times (holidays and weekends)

Big Bear in Spring

With snow generally on the ground and on the slopes into early Spring, it’s a great time to visit!  Prices will be more affordable than during the peak winter weeks, but you’ll still be able to ski and play in the snow.  Since the weather will be warming, there’s more to do outside, such as hiking and renting a pontoon boat on the lake.

If you’re visiting during the Spring and want to ski, be sure and check out the mountain conditions before booking!

Big Bear in the Summer

If cold isn’t your jam, you’ll want to visit Big Bear during the late Spring, Summer or early Fall.  The weather typically tops out in the mid-eighties (rarely will you find a cabin with air conditioning… we just don’t need it!), and it’s never too hot or smoggy for a walk along the lake or a hike in the local mountains.  Since it cools down at night (unlike some of the flat-land areas at the base of the mountain), you can still light a fire in the fireplace and roast smores.  Summer is great for going fishing or renting a boat, relaxing outside with a beer and playing out door games like cornhole.

If you visit during the summer, you can book a tee time at the Bear Mountain Golf Course (walking distance to our cabin), or check out the mountain biking course at Snow Summit.  You can zip down the roller coaster at Magic Mountain and try the high ropes course and go karts at Big Bear Snow Play.

Prices in the Summer tend to be a little higher than those of Spring or Fall, but not as high as Winter.  There are some exceptions – with holiday weekends bringing a large number of visitors.

Moonridge Family Lodge is located just a few minutes from the Lake, golf course and Snow Summit!

Big Bear in the Fall

If you’re from Socal, where we tend not to get “real” weather, you’ll be happy to know Big Bear has weather!  It cools in the Fall, the leaves change color and you’ll probably need a sweater most mornings and nights!  When it’s 100 degrees in mid-October in the San Fernando Valley, it’s a cool 70 degrees in Big Bear.

Fall brings Oktoberfest to Big Bear, and with Moonridge Family Lodge’s excellent location, it’s just a few minutes drive to the festivities.

What’s the take-away? When should you visit?

Maybe the answer is, visit 4 times a year!  Each season brings new adventures, and at Moonridge Family Lodge, whether you’re stuck inside during a snow storm or exploring the hills in late July, there’s always lots to do!  Plus, each time you’ll visit, there will be more to do!

Book your stay at Moonridge Family Lodge early to get the best rates! If you have questions before booking, we’re happy to answer them!
